I know a story that makes a heart sink Sets forth a wisdom with the sadness it brings It tells a tale of two lovers of old A Queen and her brave knight so bold King Mark lived on Tintagel shore In want of maiden and a son to be born He sent young Tristan far out to sea Saying, "Please choose a fair one for me". Iseult of Ireland was a wondrous sight Her hair was golden, flowing soft as moonlight When Tristan saw her, he knew she must be A Queen for his Lord and country And he who sought claim to hold this maid's hand Must fight the dragon that besieges the land In fearsome fighting Tristan pierced the beast's heart And he and the fair one depart In tender wisdom Iseult's mother prepared A spell-cast potion made of lilac and air To those who take a portion thereof It gives them a portion of love Brangaine the servant took the potion in hand Her maid gave motion to the simplest of plans One cup to Iseult, the other to Mark For a love that can never turn dark A ship at sea is a dangerous spot The winds may slacken and the sun may grow hot A knight and maiden lips parched from thirst May drink wine and find it a curse When Brangaine found that her vessel was dry She cursed the seagulls, cast a curse to the sky She thought of King Mark, she thought of his bride And the young knight who went by their side King Mark was married, but it gained him no bride She cast his kindness with a faint smile aside Two hearts atremble, meeting frightened in tryst Would love when they could not resist Love can't be hidden in the stillness of night King Mark found Tristan with his maid of moonlight He chased the traitors, he ran as they fled And the knights sought the price on their heads They walked a hard road in their heartache and shame Each saw the other and cried doubly in pain Tristan sent Iseult to her court proud and free And he fled like the rain to the sea Tristan died lonely on a far wooded coast He died so hungry for the one he loved most Love can bring sorrow, and sorrow bring pain As the sun is eclipsed by the rain As the sun is eclipsed by the rain |
